The
6 previous installments in this
series, have dealt with the various components of a “Total
HVAC Comfort System” and how each component contributes
to the health and sense of well being for the occupants.
This final installment, will try to answer the often
asked question “how much does it cost”?
Let's
admit right up front, we all look at price…but how about value? If we define value for example, as the amount of comfort we get from a HVAC system compared to the $$’s we spend, then we see a lot of people who get very poor value out of their HVAC systems because the cheapest price seldom equates with the best value.
Laying
aside the old adage of “what price
can you put on good health”? and similar bromides,
we know that e very HVAC system comes with
two price tags:
1. Initial
purchase price.
2.
Cost of operation and maintenance over its useful life.
Oddly
enough (to us) everyone
seems so concerned over the first cost (purchase price; which is actually the
lesser of the two costs), that they rarely consider or discuss
the 2nd cost (operation & maintenance). Too late many
learn to their sorrow, it is by far the most expensive. This
second price, the cost the homeowner pays month after month,
year after year, eventually costs far more than the original
cost of the installation.
And the old adage, that “t he
bitterness of poor quality, remains long after the sweetness
of low price is forgotten", is never truer than when
purchasing a HVAC system. Unlike smaller purchases…a
loaf of bread…a new dress, an outdated cell phone…that
can be readily discarded if the owner is dissatisfied, the
purchase of an HVAC system is a long term commitment.
As
the “ Common Law of Business” so
succinctly states: "While it's unwise to pay too
much, it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you
lose a little money….that's all. When you pay too
little, you risk losing everything, because the thing you
bought may be incapable of doing what it was bought to
do."
Careful consideration of
this second cost can result in substantial cash savings. Far more importantly,
the indoor air quality, comfort and health that you and your
family will experience for the life of the installation can
be substantially enhanced.
There
are many other considerations that
should be inherent in purchasing a HVAC system. A classic
example is the issue of service. What kind of service do
you expect from the HVAC Company before and after the installation?
Service is important! Not only when you have a problem
but equally, if not more important, in preventing problems.
Because value
can be measured in many ways, we have listed a whole page
of those things we think are important and that you have
a right to expect. Entitled “A
Customer’s Bill Of Rights”, there are too many
to list here, but you can see them all by clicking here.
We believe that he
contractor who provides the best solutions;
proves that his staff is capable; and has a track record
of responding after the sale, is the one you should select
to install your new system. That, in a nutshell, is the difference
between cost and value. Cost is how much you pay for something;
value is how much you get in relation to that cost.
In
our opinion, the best way to insure that you get
the best value for your money, whether it is solving an existing
problem, or installing a new comfort system that you will
be proud to own and enjoy for many years to come, is that
you must look beyond that first cost…you must select
a heating and air conditioning contractor with the knowledge,
experience and resources that will not just meet but if any
thing, exceed your expectations.
