Climatemakers’ Incredible Economic Stimulus
Package. (Part II)

Merry ShermanMuch has already been written (and much more yet to come) about the Governments stimulus plan that provides for Federal tax credits on energy-efficient products like heating and air conditioning (HVAC). About how you, as a homeowner, can qualify for tax credits and product rebates by installing high efficiency HVAC equipment now.

I’ll admit that I am a very skeptical person. I have always felt that there are very few occasions in life when one receives something for nothing. FREE is one word that I always look at with raised eyebrows as I look for the hidden strings.

“Rebate offers” i.e., that claim “up to” or some other equally weaseling words, fit right into this category. I always think “I’ll never be able to qualify for anything close to the “up to” number advertised.

So when I first learned that any home owner, purchasing a new, qualifying heating and cooling system in the tax years 2009 and 2010, would be eligible for Federal reimbursement up to 30% of the cost of the system ($1500 maximum), it seemed hard for me to believe. And I began to look for the “hidden strings”.

Up to a point, the statement is true. For example, it does not matter (1) how much you earn or (2) where you live or (3) what brand of system you buy, you can easily earn the whole amount of $1500! To name a few all you have to do is to buy either (1) a split air conditioner with at least a 16 S.E.E.R./13 E.E.R. or (2) a gas furnace of at least 95% efficiency or greater or (3) a heat pump with at least 15 S.E.E.R./12.5 E.E.R/8.5 H.S.P.F. It may seem hard to believe, but it’s true! No strings attached! Money to help you replace your old inefficient heating and cooling system…but it’s not exactly FREE! Note the words “all you have to do is buy”. In other words yes, you do have to give to get. You have to make an investment. That’s because the energy tax incentive is not a handout… it is a tax credit for 2009 and 2010, not a tax deduction. This means that the savings are dollar for dollar on your taxes paid to the federal government.

Also note that these incentives are only for homeowners.

          •  Tax credits of 30% up to $1,500 are available on HVAC and non-solar water heaters.

          •  Tax credits for up to 30% with no upper limit are also available for geothermal heat< pumps and solar water heaters.

To see the full list on the U.S. Department of Energy’s web site click here.

That in addition to the Federal tax incentives, there are several related rebates available.

          •  Manufacturer Product Rebates are also available. 2 of the manufacturers we represent, have product rebates from $1000-$1200.

          •  Utility Rebates up to $1025.

That said however, it does give you the opportunity to substantially reduce your living expenses month after month, year after year, through reduction of recurring energy costs (your monthly utility bill) and home improvement costs (initial costs of making energy saving improvements to your home.)

And in addition to the energy savings year after year mentioned above, there are some other good, practical reasons to “trade up”.  There is the peace of mind knowing you have a necessity in your life that you can depend on.  There are the safety improvements both in new technology and the fact that a new product probably has a much better chance of having safety components working the way they were originally designed.  There is the reliability which improves convenience. Not having to spend on repair bills is a big advantage too. It is nice to have a warranty in place and not worrying about expensive surprise repairs.

When it comes to heating and cooling your home, you have many options. The professionals at Climatemakers are committed to helping you choose the highest quality and most efficient system for your family and your budget. Helping you get the maximum benefits from the 2009 Federal Stimulus program is no exception to our stated goals.

Our family started, and has operated Climatemakers for over 56 years.  From that humble beginning, over a half century ago, we’ve made it our goal to understand every aspect of residential HVAC, that we might design and install energy efficient solutions for your home, ensuring the utmost standards of indoor air quality and comfort.

The bottom line is that if you replace your old HVAC system with one of our high efficiency systems now, we’ll help you qualify for ALL of the credits and rebates available…the (1) Federal tax credits (2) the Manufacturer’s product rebates and the (3) various Virginia Natural Gas rebates. All that is in addition to the savings you'll get each month by having a new, more energy efficient unit installed in your home for true comfort all year round.
