You get what you pay for (Part II)

     Several weeks ago, when we filled this space by questioning this old adage, we spent quite a few words, cautioning people to be sure that they do get what they pay for…that many times people don’t get what they think they are getting…and especially when they think that they are getting a “bargain”…that on the whole, it is not commercially realistic to think that a company can provide a $100 product or service for $50.      Merry ShermanWe know of course that the old adage originally came into common usage, as a not so subtle way to caution against buying cheap or inferior products and services. And that led us to this insight:

     Maybe, sometimes you can (do) get more than you pay for…for even though when you buy “on the cheap”…you may be well aware that the product or service may not last as long or perform as well as a more expensive product…you may have forgotten another old adage called “Murphy’s Law” that says that “when a thing can go wrong, it will go wrong”. But what most people don’t know, is the rest of the adage that states “and when it does go wrong, it will go wrong, at the worst time…and place”…which bring us to the point of this news letter.

     For the past several weeks,  we’ve been stressing the importance and value of getting your air conditioner ready for summer…with particular emphasis on being sure that what you get is a true “tune-up/check-up” and not a superficial “once over” that can come back to haunt you. And while we believe that most people are aware of the need for mechanical equipment to be properly maintained…we’re not so sure that they know what constitutes a complete tune up.

     And this lack of knowledge, (or inattention to detail) provides the setting where you can get more than you pay for (even though it may be unwanted). Here’s how. (1) You realize the need for maintenance and then (2) through “thriftiness, skepticism, or ignorance” you select a company offering a “tune-up” for an unbelievable low “bargain price” ($49.95, $59.95 etc).

     You paid a cheap price…you got what you paid for…a cheap service and here is where you can get more than what you paid for. In the middle of the summer, your air condition fails because it didn’t get the service it needed. That’s not too much of a surprise but what you also get is the discomfort that attends such a breakdown for you can be sure that the other law we mentioned (Murphy’s) will be right on target. And speaking of Murphy again reminds us of a corollary to that law that states that “Murphy was an optimist” but we’ll save that for another time.

     When will it break down? Not in Jan or Feb as you would like but “at the worst possible time, at the worst possible place”. When guests are due…in the middle of a hot spell…the weekend, when most HVAC companies are closed. And as an additional bonus, you get the hassle of when you can get it repaired because of the seasonal rush or even worse, an unexpected increase in the cost of a new unit, because of the same reasons mentioned above.

     So I guess we were wrong in our previous newsletter…you can get more than you pay for…something for nothing…can even get what you don’t pay for…even though you don’t want it.
