Most economists agree, that the trend for the future cost of electricity is “one way”…Up! What they don’t agree on is “how much”? Predictions range all over the spectrum…from just nominal increases to “skyrocketing” during the next several years…but always up!
Since heating and cooling is one of the biggest users of electricity (approximately 50% in most homes), the new Stimulus Package contains a powerful incentive for upgrading your old heating and air conditioning system to a new model now!
This much seems certain....you're going to pay for a new, more efficient unit whether you get one or not. As I see it, if you replace your old system now, with one of the approved models, you are eligible for a $1,500 in tax credits. In addition, if you act promptly, you can almost double this amount with Virginia Natural Gas rebates
But, if you put it off too long, you will not only lose the tax credit; you will lose the rebates as well. One thing you won’t lose is a much higher utility bill.
Here’s a 2nd thing to consider. After 2010, chemical manufacturers may still produce R-22 to service existing equipment, but not for use in new equipment. As a result, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system manufacturers will only be able to use pre-existing supplies of R-22 to produce new air conditioners and heat pumps. These existing supplies would include R-22 recovered from existing equipment and recycled. This law means it could become very expensive to repair your old system should something happen.
Recently, when one of our customer’s 10-year-old air conditioning system started acting up, he knew he needed to replace it. However, concerned about the economy, he decided to wait for the economy to improve before replacing his home’s heating and air conditioning system . The new stimulus package changed his mind.
After one of our representatives, sat down with the customer and his wife, to explain the advantages of the stimulus package and the other rebates currently in effect, they agreed that it made more sense to buy the more-efficient system to cut down utility bills starting now, and qualify for the stimulus tax credit at the same time. They summed it up very well by saying “Since we plan on staying in our house, we can enjoy better indoor air quality now and energy savings for years to come” they concluded.
To me, this is where common sense enters the picture. Find out the facts for yourself. Now that summer is nearly here, see how much more enjoyment you and your family will get from a new high efficiency system that qualifies for a 10 year manufacturers extended warranty with (1) it’s 2 speed fan operation that enhances it’s (2) dehumidification ability (3) increases it’s efficiency even greater when it is in the “low speed” mode (4) provides less air stratification (5) has peace of mind from repairs and breakdowns costs and especially (6) the satisfaction from knowing that a substantial portion of the cost will be covered in the tax credit from the stimulus program.
