The Price of Neglect

Starting the heating season with a dirty furnace (or condenser if you have a heat pump) or poor quality lubrication is a sure way to decrease the efficiency of the system’s performance and increase the chances for equipment breakdowns during periods of high heating load.

Merry ShermanIn addition to the high cost associated with replacing a motor/compressor unit that possibly could have been avoided with proper maintenance at the proper time, you may also experience delays in repairs as most equipment does not breakdown in the “off” season” but usually during peak heating months, when most HVAC service contractors, will be at their busiest.

The very fact that there is no telling what a close inspection of your heating system will reveal…leaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded electrical contacts and frayed wires (to name a few of the things we have found) is in itself, a justifiable reason for having it thoroughly examined and prepared for the coming winter season. Add to that, the benefits of improved economy of operation and the extension of the life of the system that results, makes an annual “Tune-up/Clean-up/Check up” almost mandatory.

Neglect can come in many forms. If for example, your furnace is less than 10 years old and was a high efficiency furnace to begin with, a comprehensive program, like our 32 Point “tune-up/check-up” can usually restore it to its original efficiency but if your heating system is older than that, no amount of cleaning and/or tuning can give the performance of some of the new systems on the market today.

I.e., the most significant developments in today’s heating systems do not stem from more efficient extraction of heat but from the design of the equipment. While a number of improvements have been made, the 2 most significant are multi-speed and variable-speed systems.

Multi-speed models feature burners and blowers that operate at two or more levels (builder's-grade furnaces may have two, while better models may have four or five). This simply means that the speed of the fan and the output of the burner are electronically controlled by the thermostat and that the amount and temperature of the air circulated is based on need. As there are more mild days than really cold days, the savings can be substantial-as much as 30 percent.

Variable-speed motors, available in deluxe models, offer even better efficiency and performance. While multi-speed motors use about the same electricity at low or high speeds, variable-speed motors use dramatically less energy when throttled down-as little as 65 watts. The economy of a variable-speed unit makes continually run blowers more feasible, an option that can make your house feel warmer with your thermostat set lower.

Programmable thermostats are also becoming one of the most widely used methods of reducing energy costs to consumer today. Homeowners are now able to program their systems around their busy schedules.
