Zoned Heating and Cooling Systems |
Did you know that data shows that the number-one complaint about a HVAC system is, “It's too hot” and number-two is “It's too cold”? The battle begins when someone turns the thermostat up because their room is too cool. A few moments later someone turns down the thermostat because the living room is too hot. Eventually, someone is opening a window or closing a vent to get the temperature just right, and no one is really comfortable. But there really is a better solution than playing family feud with the HVAC system.
Zoned heating and cooling systems allow you to control the temperature of each area individually. Zoning divides your home into separate comfort areas and makes your comfort equipment cool or heat only areas that need conditioning.
For example, a living space with large windows may stay too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. A zoning system will send more conditioned air to that living area to make up for the heat gained or lost through the windows. Whatever your needs, zoning can keep each area of your house at the perfect temperature for you and each family member.
How Does Zoning Work? In almost all zoning systems, zoning is controlled by thermostats in each zone. For instance, if you have three zones in your house, you will have three thermostats. With seperate thermostats, each zone signals the heating or cooling unit independently. This lets the system deliver cooling or heating only where it is needed. You will never have to cool or heat the whole house just to make one area comfortable.
Zoning Saves You Money! Zoning can drastically lower your cooling and heating bills. A good example of this is a two story house. The temperature at the location of your thermostat dictates when your system runs. In the summertime your downstairs will cool quicker than your upstairs; therefore causing your system to shut down. However, it is 10 degrees hotter upstairs. In the wintertime your downstairs will take longer to heat; causing your upstairs to be even hotter. Just think of the waste of energy!

In lieu of purchasing a separate system (which is a savings in itself) you could zone your house with a thermostat upstairs and a thermostat downstairs. With zoning, you can set each thermostat to your desired temperature. When one thermostat is satisfied; your system will continue to run forcing all the heating/cooling to the other zone until that thermostat it is satisfied. |

In my house I have 2 systems; one for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. My upstairs system is zoned with three thermostats. One for the guest rooms, one for my child’s bedroom and one for the room over the garage. My downstairs is zoned with two thermostats. One for the living space and one for the master bedroom. |
You are saving money by not continually running the system trying to get all areas comfortable. Plus, less runtime is less possible mechanical failures of your system. Another way zoning can save money is when you are not at home. When you leave for work or vacation, you can set the whole house at an energy-saving temperature to avoid conditioning an empty house. You can program them to have your living areas comfortable when you arrive home.

You have a light switch in every room in your house, Why not have a thermostat…..for every zone???
You wouldn’t dream of turning the lights on in every room of your house in the evening; that would be a tremendous waste of energy. But that’s what you do when you control your heating and cooling system with one thermostat. Even automobile manufactures offer zoning as individual driver and passenger temperature controls in many new cars models.

ZONING IS: |
| |
| |
COMFORT… solves the problem of some rooms being too warm while other rooms may be to cold. |
| |
| |
CONVENIENCE… No longer will you have to go to the hallway or the first floor to adjust the temperature for the bedroom. (Thermostats can be installed in strategic locations)
| |
| |
CONSERVATION… Zoning can save on average 15% to 30% by only conditioning the occupied spaces. |
| |
| |
COMMON SENSE… An average of 15% to 30%; typically heating and cooling account for 2/3 of the typical utility bill. |
