In the 3 previous newsletters, of this series, we have described some of the changes that have occurred in HVAC systems during the past 20 years that reinforce our statement “that today as never before, technology and HVAC are inseparable”. You can review these discussions by clicking here to go to the newsletter archives and retrieve them, where you can refresh your memory at your leisure, not only on this subject, but dozens of other facets of the HVAC industry as well.

The first letter in this series, discussed the increased comfort and efficiency that is now available with the use of variable speed blower motors. That by being able to supply the exact quantity of conditioned air as needed, is such a vast improvement over the old “On” and “Off” blowers of yesteryear.

Next we discussed the revolutionary improvement in efficiency that is now available with the technologically advanced scroll type compressors. To see a live and detailed version of a scroll compressor, click here.

The final step is to marry these 2 concepts. This would result in a scroll compressor with variable speed. Then not only would the blower motor of the HVAC unit be able to adjust the delivery of the quantity of conditioned into the house as required but a 2 stage scroll compressor would vary the temperature of the air to suit the requirements. Voila! Optimum comfort and maximum economy.

Lennox Industries offers a new series (DLSC) of 3-5 Ton split systems (many of which feature the most energy-efficient residential split system in the marketplace). This includes the industry’s first high-efficiency, two-stage scroll compressor utilizing R410, an environmentally friendlier refrigerant, with high efficiency levels up to an unprecedented 20+ SEER!

The cooling capacities of these two-stage units are typically sized for your home so that 80 percent of its running time is in the super-efficient low-output stage. Only on very hot afternoons does it automatically switch to maximum output.

All of the two-stage scroll models in this series offer many advantages over single-speed models. These exceptional units not only help to save money and operating costs through high efficiency levels but since they mostly run at the low-output stage, they do not switch “on” and “off” as often. This keeps the air circulating, holds room temperatures more constant, improves air cleaner effectiveness, reduces noisy start-ups, and dehumidifies better.

And although your old indoor blower may be able to be used with these technologically advanced two stage scroll compressors, it is best to install a new indoor blower with variable-speed capabilities. As we mentioned previously, these advanced style blowers use only 25 percent as much electricity as your old one and have "smart" motors with a soft-start feature to reduce start-up noise and drafts.
