It's Not Your Father's HVAC System! (Conclusion)

We believe that the last 4 newsletters have proved conclusively, that in today’s HVAC systems, technology and HVAC are inseparable and they are a far cry from those of yesteryear. To summarize (and conclude) these findings, bear in mind that here in the Virginia Beach Area, the approved method to calculate the size of the HVAC system (heating and/or air conditioning or heat pump) requires that the unit be able to heat a house to 70º F inside when the outside temperature is 15º (a 55º Temperature difference) and cool it in the summer to 75º F inside when the outside temperature is 90º F (a 15º Temperature difference).

Merry Sherman     This also means that because the units must be sized to maintain correct temperatures in the severest weather, 85%-90% of the time in moderate weather (especially in Spring and Fall), these units are too big for the job and as a consequence, provide less than ideal comfort. To  compensate for this, a variety of new technological innovations have been developed…the most important among them being variable speed motors and compressors.

For example, Lennox has a Two-Stage HVAC system that is like getting 2 pieces of equipment in one; a big one to ensure comfort during extreme weather and a smaller one (60% capacity of the big one), that operates most of the time, thereby not only providing optimum, improved  comfort conditions but the improved efficiency and economy of operation  borders on the spectacular.

Unlike most standard systems, where the motor that runs the blower operates at only one speed and is either “on” or “off”, a variable speed fan motor is able to vary the speed of the air through the duct work, to provide a steady, gentle flow of air into the rooms of your home. This minimizes stratification and results in a much smaller floor to ceiling temperature differential, which increases the comfort level of the occupants substantially.

Similarly, two-stage scroll compressors offer many advantages over single-speed models. By controlling the amount of conditioned air available, these exceptional units not only help to save money and operating costs through high efficiency levels but since they mostly run at the low-output stage, they don’t switch “on” and “off” as often. This keeps the air circulating, holds room temperatures more constant, improves air cleaner effectiveness, reduces noisy start-ups, and dehumidifies better.

     HVAC systems equipped with variable
speed blower motors and 2 stage compressors, offer the ultimate in quiet, economical comfort. They respond to calls for comfort by starting slowly and gently ramping up to quickly deliver just the right amount of conditioned air to your home as required. They maintain your comfort quietly and economically by providing a nearly continuous flow of conditioned air at just the right temperature and speed desired.

As the outdoor weather conditions change, variable speed fan operation, coupled with two-stage heating & cooling equipment, continue to manage your indoor comfort with just the right amount of conditioned air. A programmable thermostat will even enhance this operation as it takes into consideration the house activities (away, asleep etc).

If your HVAC system is 10 years old or more, you may be surprised at how many other recent technological innovations that there are available to contribute to your comfort and save you money.

For most individuals, installing a HVAC system is a sizable investment. We believe very strongly, that it is vitally important in order for you to assure comfort, economy and satisfaction, that you find a company that is knowledgeable in the industry…that is reliable and qualified…that you can trust not only to install the best system for your needs but to maintain it and eventually to fix it when and if it ever needs repairs (all things mechanical do).

Depending upon your previous experience, you may think that finding such a trustworthy company is akin to finding a needle in a haystack.
