Why Is the Pilot Light Going Out in My Norfolk, VA Gas Furnace?

November 17, 2022

If you’ve been having problems with your gas furnace, and the pilot light keeps going out, you’re not alone. This is a common problem that many people experience in Norfolk, VA. Here are several reasons why your pilot light may be going out.

1. Thermocouple Malfunctions

The thermocouple is a safety device located near the pilot light. Its purpose is to sense when the pilot light is lit and to turn off the gas flow if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is not working properly, it may turn off the gas even when the pilot light is lit, causing the furnace to shut down.

2. Dirty or Blocked Burner Assembly

The burner assembly is where the pilot light flame ignites the main burners. If this area is dirty, it can cause the pilot light to go out. Dirt buildup in the intake valve can also cause this problem.

3. Leaking Gas Valve

A leaking gas valve is a severe safety hazard; you need to fix it immediately. If you suspect your gas valve is leaking, turn off the furnace and call a professional to repair or replace it.

4. Improperly Adjusted Air Intake Damper

The air intake damper regulates the amount of air that flows into the combustion chamber. If you don’t adjust this damper properly, it can cause the pilot light to go out. The damper should be fully open when the furnace is on.

5. Exhaust Vent Blockage

The exhaust vent allows dangerous gases to escape from the furnace. Blocked vent can cause the pilot light to go out. Check the vent regularly to ensure it is clear and debris-free.

Most challenges with pilot lights occur due to one of the reasons stated above. If you’re having trouble keeping your pilot light lit, check for dirt build-up or blockages around the burner assembly and thermocouple. Contact Climatemakers to help with proper maintenance and repairs.
